Decorating Mantle Ideas Rustic Christmas
Combine evergreen foliage with seasonal sparkle for rustic Christmas decorations for the tree, the table and outdoors.
1. Christmas tree decorations
Decorations in rich reds, golds and glittering finishes are mixed to great effect with characterful felted and painted pieces on this fresh spruce tree.

2. Gifts and garlands
For simple yet cheery festive touches, hang up strings of stars made from colourful paper or create a tree collage on a plain wall using Christmas cards or botanical prints – ideal if you don't have the space for a real one.

Shop the Country Living Charnwood stove (in picture above) here.
For extra decorative impact when wrapping presents, overlay festive ribbons (£2.49, Amazon) and attach a handmade label (£7.98 for one pack plus twine, Amazon), feathers or sprig of holly. Decorated star biscuits make a thoughtful gift presented in a linen bag or seasonal tin (£12.99 for 3 tins of varying sizes, Amazon).

3. Hanging Christmas table decorations
Folded paper ball decorations in jolly reds and crisp whites bring a sense of fun to this rustic table (£1.75 each, Amazon).

4. Christmas star garland
Using adhesive spray, attach patterned paper (From £3 for 24 sheets, Hobbeycraft) to both sides of a piece of lightweight card. Draw star shapes and cut out with a scalpel. Make six small holes with a wooden skewer or rotary hole punch and, using twine and a needle, sew three lines to make a star effect, starting and finishing at the two holes on either side so it hangs well.

5. Papercut tree silhouettes
Draw and cut out a large and small tree template on a piece of thick card. Draw around these on lightweight white card several times and cut out. Fold the tree shapes in half. Use a scalpel to cut fine folk-art patterns on the branches and down the centre of the trees. Unfold and stick the trunks to a strip of card.

6. Twig star decoration
Select five bare winter twigs from a shrub such as cornus that has fairly straight branches. Arrange them into a star shape on a flat surface, then secure the ends with twine. Cut down overlong ends with secateurs to finish. Wrap a festive garland or fairy lights around the twigs for a seasonal flourish.

7. Christmas candle holders
Fill glass jars with evergreen foliage to help anchor a candle. Finish by wrapping twine around the neck to secure a star cut out from lightweight card for a name place setting. (Baker's twine, £6/reel; glass jars, £1.95 each: all The Conran Shop. Whistler Forest domes, £12.99 (set of three), Lights 4 Fun.)

8. Christmas willow wreath decoration
A Christmas willow wreath interwoven with herbs and greenery will make a striking statement.

9. All that glitters
Gilt and metallic-hued picture frames, with luxurious furnishings in jewel-coloured tones, create a rich effect. Add sparkle to place settings with gold cutlery, accessorised with favour bags, party hats and crackers. Continue the theme with baubles, twinkling tealights and gleaming glassware.

10. All is bright
A few bold, colourful hanging decorations will bring a festive feel to a child's bedroom.
